Airfix Blackpool Illuminations Spitfire Mk V

An interesting release by modelling giant Airfix is this localised celebration of the communal purchases of Spitfire’s Progress I, II, and III during WW2. It wasn’t uncommon for towns or cities to donate funds to the war efforts in order to purchase an aircraft or equipment, and that’s just what happened with these Spitfire’s.

Airfix have worked with VisitBlackpool in order to commemorate the beautiful Progress II in this re-release of their Spitfire MK V Starter Set, and what a treat it is! The actual kit itself I reviewed in full over here so won’t go over again, but this release is really interesting.

I always think it’s nice when manufacturer’s acknowledge historical events with these interesting boxings. Don’t get me wrong, I understand there’s a business and commercial aspect to this – but my heart is warmed by the memories preserved and re-ignited by these limited edition sets.

My boxing went together so well, and I did it as a ‘reintroduction’ to the hobby after a 5 month break due to a change of work and moving house. It was a really fun and easy build, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Definitely wasn’t my best work, but often that’s the case with mojo builds like this.

I built my whole kit in a few hours, and although I damaged the ‘Progress’ wording (and had to clumsily paint the Pr on myself) I really love the end result. It’s hard to argue with a beautiful spitfire, and this was no different.

Could I have done better? Yes. Did I enjoy myself? Absolutely.

Buy or Fly

Whether you chose to buy this kit is a bit of a hard question. It’s £19.99 for a starter set that’s easily available between £9-13. However, if you’re a northerner and want something that’s close to home without having to get any additional decals…well…this is perfect!

Plus, for me, it was nice having an extra brush that Mr Modeller can use whilst I use my lovely set that supporters of my Youtube channel got me! So it worked out for me.

So I recommend it, but only if you want the unique boxing and limited edition goodness.
