Bolton Model Show 2024

Every year we all have our own rituals – which club will be the first we attend. For me, each year, that is Bolton’s model show. Located at the stadium of the local football team, it’s one of the biggest shows in the country outside of 2 day events.

Arriving at the show we are met with a second year where we must build our anticipation in the queue. Yes, even model shows can have downsides – in this instance that’s the queue! Last year I spent 20 minutes in the queue, and this year I spent 35. However, I think that’s more a sign of the rampant popularity of the show rather than a big draw back – just bring warms and a waterproof!

The show itself is spead over the main suite room, and a mezzanine level. The lighting is not bad throughout the show – meaning each club gets it’s fair showing. The layout seemed to be the same as last years with most clubs being in the exact same position. The upstairs has some slightly more yellow lighting but nothing as devastating as the sports halls we are all used to.

The show seemed relatively accesible with only one aisle that was a bit thinner – wheelchair users appear to have good access. But you’re not here to talk about the venue – you’re here for the models!

Of course, check out the video for most of the pictures (I’ll pop some on here but every single club and SIG is covered in the video) but a few are on my phone.

The variety of clubs at the show is always lovely at Bolton. The location means that we get a fair few Welsh clubs, a couple of Scottish clubs, and English clubs from throughout the country.

The variety of clubs is matched by the even wider variety of models. From dioramas showing epic feats, to squadrons of Warhammer, aircraft of fantasy, to Bolt Action heroes. It brings a smile to my eye as both a tabletop player, a wargamer, and a modeller.
